RICHARD AVEDON EXHIBITION TO OPEN IN SAN FRANCISCO

April 29, 2009

ARTDAILY.ORG

As a highlight of its summer exhibitions schedule, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is pleased to present Richard Avedon: Photographs 1946–2004, on view from July 11 through November 29, 2009.

Widely celebrated as one of America’s preeminent photographers, Avedon was among the first to challenge the conventional boundaries between studio photography and reportage. Some of his best-known portraits—a young Bob Dylan standing in the rain, Marilyn Monroe caught in a vulnerable moment, Nastassja Kinski wearing nothing but a boa constrictor—are the most iconic of the 20th century.

Whether photographing politicians, artists, models, or Hollywood stars, Avedon revolutionized the genre of portraiture. His daring style rejected conventional poses and instead captured both motion and emotion in the faces of his subjects, often encapsulating their intrigue in a single honest moment.

SFMOMA is the only U.S. venue for this exhibition, which is the first major retrospective of the Avedon’s work since his death in 2004. A selection of more than 200 photographs spanning the artist’s entire career are presented roughly chronologically, highlighting major themes and benchmarks of Avedon’s output: his early, post–World War II street scenes; his breakthrough Paris fashion work in the 1950s; his far-reaching survey of American counterculture in the 1960s and ’70s; his Reagan-era series, which focused on ordinary people living in the western United States; and his portraits of the nation’s most influential people.

The exhibition was organized by Helle Crenzien for The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark, in cooperation with The Richard Avedon Foundation. Its San Francisco presentation is overseen by SFMOMA Senior Curator of Photography Sandra S. Phillips and is made possible by generous support from the Bernard Osher Foundation and Credit Suisse.

Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) is one of the most influential and prolific image makers of all time. He created some of the most iconic images of stars such as Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn – never failing to capture their natural elegance and beauty. Throughout the 1920s his photography was featured in Vogue and Vanity Fair, providing an accurate and unique representation of the enchanting era.

From the 22nd April, an exhibition of Beaton’s photographs will be on display at the Chris Beetles Gallery in Central London in collaboration with premier auction house, Sotheby’s. The collection will feature original vintage prints, as well as modern prints produced form initial negatives drawn from the extensive archive at Sotheby’s. Each of the beautiful modern prints will be available in an edition of 50, all adorning the archive’s official stamp. LINDAY LOHAN GETS A ‘MARILYN’ TATTOO

April 19, 2009

Actress/singer Lindsay Lohan has been a self-proclaimed Marilyn fan for quite some time now. She has recently gotten a tattoo on her inner wrist that reads, “Everyone’s a star and deserves the right to twinkle.”

The quote was taken from a telegram Marilyn sent to Mr. & Mrs. Robert Kennedy on June 13th, 1962. She was declining a party invite.

The telegram read, “‘Unfortunately, I am involved in a freedom ride protesting the loss of the minority rights belonging to the few remaining earthbound stars. All we demanded was our right to twinkle.”

Proud Central is delighted to present Audrey and Marilyn – Photographs by Sam Shaw. In celebration of Audrey Hepburn’s 80th birthday Proud presents the Sam Shaw Collection, a definitive look at the 20th Century’s foremost female icons – Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.  Showing internationally accredited photographs such as the infamous Marilyn over the Subway grate shot, alongside never before seen shots of Marilyn’s extraordinary life. This exhibition will celebrate Hollywood’s leading ladies in a way rarely seen.

This exhibition has been specially put together for Proud Galleries by the Sam Shaw Archive and will be his first UK show to feature both actresses. This exhibition will not be able to be viewed anywhere else after its time at Proud Central, making it the most important collection of it’s time.

I finally received my Blonde Ambition Barbie as Marilyn Monroe doll last week! I pre-ordered it in August as her release date was in March 2009. Although I’m not too happy that Mattel used the Model Muse body, I have to say that the doll is much better than the prototype. A beautiful doll for anyones Marilyn collection!
